What is Semrush
Semrush is an independent website SEO tool. It is mainly used for website paid advertising viewing, keyword research, and keyword ranking data research. Like Ahrefs, basic keyword difficulty, search volume, CPC cost, competitor CPC ads, etc. can be viewed through domain name search.
In general independent site analysis and research, it is often used to view one’s own or competitors’ paid and non-paid data, as well as to make some traffic estimates.
Compared with real sites, Semrush has a larger traffic estimate than Ahrefs, so it is usually considered in combination with Ahrefs and other tools such as KWFinder.
Semrush Common Features & Tutorials
Here are some of the commonly used features of Semrush .
Website overall information report
Semrush ‘s overall website information report is a commonly used function. Semrush is usually used to view our website’s Authority Score, Organic Search Traiffic, Paid Search Traffic, Backlinks, etc.
In the early stages of a website, you’ll usually use Organic to check the number of keywords. Generally speaking, Semrush ’s organic traffic estimate is more than the actual traffic, while Ahrefs’ organic traffic estimate is less than the actual traffic, so you’ll often look at both Semrush and Ahrefs together.
Website keyword competition analysis
In addition to the Semrush website overall information report, the website’s keyword competition analysis is also a commonly used function in keyword research, in the Organic Research and Keyword Overview sections of the Semrush interface.
Different analyses can be performed here according to different countries, usually looking at the number of Keywords (you can click in to see the specific words), Traffic flow, Traffic Cost (a value that measures the weight of the website traffic value), Branded Traffic (branded word traffic, usually the level of branded word traffic reflects the user’s awareness of the website brand. If it is too low, it means that a certain amount of investment should be made in brand promotion), and Non-Branded Traffic (non-branded word traffic).
Website traffic structure analysis
When you need to conduct refined operations on the traffic of an independent website, you can use Semrush ‘s “Traffic Analytics” function. Semrush will display the estimated visitor indicators of Visits, the number of unique visitors, the PV value, the average stay time of Avg Visit Duration, the bounce rate, etc.
The Semrush panel provides the traffic number of specific Page pages. Generally, in actual use, we will look at the Top Pages value to analyze the most popular pages of our website, as well as the size of these page traffic, PV, etc.
Website backlink analysis
Website link analysis, especially backlink analysis, is also a commonly used function of Semrush . You can see the specific functions in the Backlink Analytics menu bar on the left side of the panel.
The Semrush dashboard also provides the total number of Backlinks links. Click on it to see which specific website links to our website. In the Backlinks analysis module, we mainly look at the Page AS authority score of the website that links to us, as well as the Source page Title and URL, the page title and specific URL link where the other party puts our website URL address.
Anchor and Target URL is the anchor on the other party’s page and the specific URL page it points to on our website.
Website ranking tracking
Website ranking is a long process. We can track the adjustments we make using the ranking tracking module in Semrush .
By adding domain names in the panel, you can track the growth of your Organic Keywords and Organic Traffic in the long term. If the website is still running ads, Paid Keywords can be captured by Semrush , and Paid Traffic will also be displayed in the panel.
SemrushBot spider crawler
SemrushBot is the spider crawler of the Semrush tool, which is mainly used to crawl the web page data of our website. Like the Google Bot crawler, only after being crawled by the Bot crawler will it be included and recorded in the search engine database.
Usually, tools like Ahrefs will have their own spider crawlers that regularly crawl sites on the Internet and read and store site rankings, CPC, and various website data.
Website paid advertising analysis
I usually use semrush , and I also use the Advertising Research module on the panel to analyze website paid advertising to observe competitors’ advertising situations.
The more practical modules here, such as Ads Copies and Ads History, can show the search ads and ad history of the target website. Looking at several competitors’ running and historical ads will usually serve as a reference for optimization when we put up ads.
Semrush vs Ahrefs
For the same website, we use Semrush and Ahrefs to estimate the organic traffic of the domain name at the same time. The data obtained by Semrush is obviously much higher than that of Ahrefs.
Generally speaking, the traffic data estimated by Semrush is more than the actual data, and the data estimated by Ahrefs is less than the actual data. When using Semrush and Ahrefs, they will be viewed together.
In terms of the use of tools, Semrush focuses on advertising, while Ahrefs focuses on natural traffic and external links. For friends who do English SEO , Ahrefs is more convenient to use.
When I do keyword research on English websites and look at keyword tracking, I will use Ahrefs first in 80% of cases. If the website involves paid advertising, Semrush will be used first for research.
